2020 has been an exceptional year, with both hard times and new opportunities. In a world threatened by a global pandemic, governments, industries and organisations had to be resourceful to protect people’s health while remaining operational. The role of water as one of our most important resources has been more obvious than ever. Not only for sanitation purposes in battling the spread of the virus, but also for businesses to remain operational and to produce the vital products and services that keep our society running.
Even though the pandemic caused society to slow down and even come to a standstill in some regions, water management has remained a focus point for progression. Fuelled by another year of droughts and water stress, access to clean and sustainable water has continued to rise in the priority list.
- The Flemish Government has launched the Blue Deal, an initiative that should support all stakeholders in society in our continuing quest for water efficiency.
- Companies have paid more attention to water management and have set ambitious goals in their sustainability strategy.
- Private individuals are more thoughtful on water consumption and expect the government & companies to act sustainably when it comes to water use.
- Researchers have increased the efforts to develop more sustainable technologies.
